Clifford had no problem believing Loki. His mind went back through the years to a young buck named Nashoba. He, too, had been Choctaw, and his visions had saved Clifford’s life, as well as that of his crew and ship, more than once. He’d told Clifford his name meant wolf, which had proven appropriate. His stealth and cunning had gotten them out of some bad situations. “This woman killed Jake’s wife, so why does she want him now?”

Loki spread her hands. “Her mind is like a chameleon. It changes with the wind, or with a thought. She doesn’t want to kill him, she simply wants to torture him by killing others.”

“So you’re saying she’s crazy. Kind of already figured that one out.” Clifford sipped his drink. “When you say killing others, are you talking about Jenna and Harry?”

She met his gaze, a slight mist visible behind her lashes. “Jenna, Harry, you, this man Drago, and the big man, Geno”—her voice dropped to a whisper—“me.”

“Do you know how this ends?”

“There are two scenarios. Neither of them good for everyone.”

“Real or warnings?” Clifford asked.

She gave him a sad smile. “I can’t tell, but I would say one is real.”

Because of Nashoba, Clifford understood her dilemma. If she told him, she could bring about the thing she wanted to avoid—or something worse. He took one of her hands and held it in his. “I know you can’t tell me what you’ve seen, so I won’t ask you to. Maybe if we work together, we can find another way. Is there someone in the visions who can make a difference in the outcome?”

Her eyes dimmed for a moment. “There is a man, a dark man. He is without morals, without”—she struggled to find the right word—“perhaps conscience or convictions.”

“Marcus Dade.”

“You know this man?” Loki asked.

“Too damn well,” Clifford said, standing. “I have a couple of men I would like to hear what you have to say. You’ve met Drago. Do you mind?”

Loki shook her head, heaving a sigh of relief. “I wasn’t sure you would believe me.”

Clifford smiled at her and opened the study door. “Remind me someday to tell you about Nashoba.”
